ABOUT US

Our Approach to Treatment

We endeavor in our approach to personalize treatment care. This requires a holistic perspective with a diversified skill set. We are passionate about exploring your health with you.

Personalized Care

Old Stony Physiotherapy prioritizes your needs. We have private rooms to support your confidentiality. Our treatment appointments are 30 minutes one-on-one personalized care and we have built in the flexibility for longer appointments if necessary. Your treatment plan will be collaborative, building on the knowledge and tools you are already incorporating. We will then design accessibility into that plan.

Communication

Personalized care necessitates skilled and open communication! Listening and understanding the context of your present health concern is the first and most important step in assisting you. We encourage questions and ongoing dialogue through the entirety of our time together. Health is alive and dynamic, and communication enables us to adapt your treatment care in real time.

Knowledge & Empowerment

Strong communication allows us to pass critical information back and forth. Knowledge and understanding of where you are, where you’ve been, what has worked for you and what has not worked for you, deeply informs us how to most effectively assist you today. Your participation in your health is your greatest asset. We strive to encourage, empower and support you in that through education and sharing of knowledge.

Connection and Confidence

When all the above elements align, connection naturally falls into place. Connection fuels confidence in your ability to recover strongly from an acute injury or to gracefully manage a lifelong chronic condition. Confidence then gives us back an ease to our health and our life.

Our Physiotherapists

Katie R

Katie Richter

MscPT, BSc with Distinction

Hi I’m Katie! I graduated with a Masters in Physical Therapy in 2016 from the University of Alberta. Prior to that I completed a Bachelor of Science degree with distinction. My fascination for the body and how it is all connected, combined with my interest in helping people, brought me into the field of physiotherapy.

Since becoming a physiotherapist I have trained in needling techniques including intramuscular stimulation and acupuncture. I have also trained in women’s pelvic physiotherapy. It was here I gained deep insight into the intimate connection between our body and its nervous system. This  now guides my entire treatment approach.

I believe in the resilience of the body and its ability to adapt. Our bodies are amazing units where everything is connected. I acknowledge that everyone is different and pride myself in providing specialized treatment for each individual while having some fun along the way! Because laughter is the best medicine, right?!

Outside of work I love to be in nature whether that is gardening, quading or kayaking. I am always down for an adventure! Doing the activities I love is very important to me which is why it is my priority to get you back to doing what you love so you can feel like you!

Dip.PT, Certified Medical Acup., RYT,  Certified Meditation Teacher

In 1995 I graduated with a Diploma of Physiotherapy from the Krankengymnastik Schuele, Suelfeld in Germany.  For two years I worked in the Staedtisches Krankenhaus Kiel (Kiel Community Hospital) with a focus in Neurology and Orthopaedics. Upon my return to Canada I narrowed my practice and studies to Manual Therapy and Spinal Manipulation. In 2004 my focus shifted abruptly, and I began an intense study in the more holistic Eastern practices of acupuncture, yoga and meditation. In 2019 I completed training for the application of Intramuscular Stimulation.

This blend of Western and Eastern medicinal practices and philosophies has culminated into a truly unique skill set. I enjoy the creative exploration these tools enable and look forward to walking with you on your health and wellness journey.

Karen

Karen Chouinard

Hi there!  My name is Karen and I am proud to be a physical therapist that offers a holistic approach.  Four words to describe me are:  sporty, spiritual, intuitive and kind.

I graduated from the University of Alberta in 1998 at the top of my class and have since taken additional training in Matwork Pilates, Craniosacral Therapy, Somatoemotional Release, Visceral Manipulation, Anatomical Acupuncture, Dry Needling, and Reiki.

I come to work every day ready to inspire, guide, and empower others to find peace in their bodies and joy in their lives.

The majority of my clients are those for whom traditional treatments have not fully resolved their symptoms.  Clients with a history of trauma or those whose symptoms are made worse with stress are excellent referrals.  Conditions I commonly treat are concussions, headaches, TMJ dysfunction, tinnitus, chronic sports injuries, and long-standing neck and back issues.

When I’m not at work I love lifting weights, playing hockey, cheering for the Oilers, watching rom-coms, and simply just being.  In university I was a goalie for the University of Alberta Pandas Hockey team, Academic All-Canadian and Canada West Champion.
